More on tonnage comparisons and Short Sea solutions.

I’m sure many of my customers and friends have noticed the increasing amount of heavy commercial traffic on our streets and highways so I thought I’d put out a few facts gleaned from some of my trade magazines. I hope you find them interesting.

I often get inquiries about who is responsible for insuring the cargo in a sales transaction. There are several options but if you are regularly sending goods from one country to another on a regular basis it is better for both you and your customer if you take care of the insurance. The following is an excellent article from Great American Insurance Company who is one of the fine companies we work with. I hope you find the article interested. Thanks for your support, Gene Horton

In getting material for my news and tips I go to several sources. These include trade magazines and bullitins from various underwriters. The source for this article is one of our underwriters, Great American Insurance Company. This article is noteworthy because of the sheer number of containers these new ships now carry. Eight thousand is now the norm, with ten and twelve thousand TEU's comming into service. It is also a good follow up to my article on liability from your cargo. Thanks to my underwriters at Great American. I hope everyone finds this article interesting and useful. Thanks for your support, Gene Horton

Here’s a great article I came across from the law firms of Cozen O’Connor. They are one of the most prominent admiralty law firms and over the years I have had the pleasure of attending their seminars that they offer to lawyers, insurance people, surveyors and other people involved in all sectors of the maritime industry. This article is about economic losses. In the case discussed, a defective part caused further damage to the vessel. As marine specialty brokers, I would be happy to discuss these coverage questions with you. Thanks to John Reis of Cozen O’Connor for this excellent article. I hope you find it interesting. Thanks for your support,Gene Horton

One of my customers who imports yachts has raised an interesting question regarding a shipper’s liability arising out of a yacht shipment. Here’s the question. Suppose your cargo damages cargo belonging to other cargo owners. Please read on to learn about these exposures.

To all of our customers and friends. We are really starting to see more activity. Many vessel owners feel this issue does affect them, particularly small commercial vessels and yachts. Yacht owners just haven’t had this on their radar. As an example, if a yacht is registered at 50 gross tons, the fine at $950.00 per ton could be not less than $47,500.00 and up to $800,000.00. Please see the complete News and Tips article. Thanks for your support,Gene Horton

*****Just a reminder. After 31 December 2006 US boaters can no longer use emergency position indicating beacons operating 121.5 and 243 Mhz but now must use 406 Mhz units. I don't know of the availability or costs of the new units. Look for further details at you local electronics store.***** Thank for your support, Gene Horton

As an insurance broker serving the maritime trade I have the benifit of many sources of both interesting and useful information. We deal with everyone from admiralty attorneys, surveyors, underwriters and other trade sources. One of my best and favorite sources is Best Review. Many of you may have heard of A.M. Best. They are the premier independant rating service. I've been getting their Best Review for years and always find something of interest. This article was on terrorism and the cruise ship industry. It could also apply to all passenger vessels. I hope you find it interesting. Thanks for your support, Gene Horton
